South Africa January 2012

South Africa 2011 was great. So we decided to fly again to South Africa.
This time we wanted to see more than only Cape Town.

We planned a route from Johannesburg to Cape Town via Bloemfontein, Mossel Bay and Cape Agulhas.

Long story short: great landscape!

You can find an overview of the pictures of this at the end of this page.

Traveling from Johannesburg to Beafort West, the lanscape changes every few dozend kilometers.
Before heading south at Beaufort West, you pass the Three Sisters (approx. 70 km ne of Beaufort West).

These are nice whitness buttles in the great landscape of the Great Karoo.

The City of Beaufort West is located at the Great Escarpment.

You should plan a stop of a few days here to check the surroundings and the Karoo national park.
Unfortunately, we didn’t do that.

We left Beaufort West immedeately and turned south on the N12 towards the Swartberg Mountains.

This day we had clear views to the Swartberg Mountains in the South and backward to the Great Escarpment in the North. An astonishing view!

Following the N12, throught the Meiringspoort (wow!) and over the Outeniqua Pass we arrived at George at night. Seen from the Outeniqua Pass, George gave us a nice
picture.

From George to Mossel Bay and Dana Bay it was only a short drive, where we staid two nights.

You should plan at least two nights in this region. There is so much to see!

A hightlight is definetly the Swartberg Pass. A pretty long mountain pass with great views! You won’t forget this!

After our short stop in Dana Bay at the Indian Ocean, we followed the N2 to Cape Town. We also stopped at the southernmost point of Africa: Kap Agulhas.

After app. 2200 km we arrived in Cape Town.

Here you can have daily trips, e.g. a hike to the top of Table Mountain. You should start early, when the temperatures a moderate. You walk more or less the whole trail in the sun. So don’t forget to have enought water with you.

Drive to Signal Hil at night and enjoy the great view over Cape Town.

Also nice is Cape of Good Hope. Go there via the Chapman’s Peak drive.

A great scenery you also find about an hour north-east, Paarl, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch.

Here are some pictures of our trip.
